The time will come — and it may not be far off — when quite different tendencies will come up at a congress like the one held in 1912 and people will say: It is pathological for people to even think in terms of spirit and soul. ‘Sound’ people will speak of nothing but the body. It will be considered a sign of illness for anyone to arrive at the idea of any such thing as a spirit or a soul. People who think like that will be considered to be sick and — you can be quite sure of it — a medicine will be found for this. At Constantinople the spirit was made non-existent. The soul will be made non-existent with the aid of a drug. Taking a ‘sound point of view’, people will invent a vaccine to influence the organism as early as possible, preferably as soon as it is born, so that this human body never even gets the idea that there is a soul and a spirit.

The two philosophies of life will be in complete opposition. One movement will need to reflect how concepts and ideas may be developed to meet the reality of soul and spirit. The others, the heirs of modern materialism, will look for the vaccine to make the body ‘healthy’, that is, makes its constitution such that this body no longer talks of such rubbish as soul and spirit, but takes a ‘sound’ view of the forces which live in engines and in chemistry and let planets and suns arise from nebulae in the cosmos. Materialistic physicians will be asked to drive the souls out of humanity.

It will be the main concern of these spirits of darkness to bring confusion into the rightful elements which are now spreading on earth, and need to spread in such a way that the spirits of light can continue to be active in them. They will seek to push these in the wrong direction. I have already spoken of one such wrong direction, which is about as paradoxical as is possible. [ Note 1 ] I have pointed out that while human bodies will develop in such a way that certain spiritualities can find room in them, the materialistic bent, which will spread more and more under the guidance of the spirits of darkness, will work against this and combat it by physical means. I have told you that the spirits of darkness are going to inspire their human hosts, in whom they will be dwelling, to find a vaccine that will drive all inclination towards spirituality out of people’s souls when they are still very young, and this will happen in a roundabout way through the living body. Today, bodies are vaccinated against one thing and another; in future, children will be vaccinated with a substance which it will certainly be possible to produce, and this will make them immune, so that they do not develop foolish inclinations connected with spiritual life — ‘foolish’ here, of course, in the eyes of materialists.

These, as I said, are the beginnings in the field of literature. The whole trend goes in a direction where a way will finally be found to vaccinate bodies so that these bodies will not allow the inclination towards spiritual ideas to develop and all their lives people will believe only in the physical world they perceive with the senses. Out of impulses which the medical profession gained from presumption — oh, I beg your pardon, from the consumption they themselves suffered — people are now vaccinated against consumption, and in the same way they will be vaccinated against any inclination towards spirituality. This is merely to give you a particularly striking example of many things which will come in the near and more distant future in this field — the aim being to bring confusion into the impulses which want to stream down to earth after the victory of the spirits of light.

Among the materialists of the nineteenth century, this consciousness of the soul had already disappeared to such an extent that it was said that the brain secretes thoughts just as the liver secretes bile. It seemed, therefore, as if only a consciousness of the bodily processes remained. In fact, already today, without people knowing it, there are all kinds of underground societies that work toward things that lead in a direction similar to the one decided upon in 869 at the Council of Constantinople. They work to explain that man does not consist of both body and soul but rather that man consists only of the body and that the soul is merely something that develops out of the body. It is therefore impossible, if you take this viewpoint, to educate man from the aspect of soul; one must find a substance, a material substance, that can be injected into a human being at a certain age; then he will develop his talents by injection. This tendency definitely exists. It is right in line with the Ahrimanic development: no longer establish schools in order to teach, but inject certain substances instead. This is possible. It is not as if it were not possible. It is indeed possible, but the human being is made thereby into an automaton. One would speed up immensely what would otherwise be achieved by means of developing ready-made thoughts, with an education that overpowers thinking. There are already such substances that can be developed, substances that if injected at seven years of age, for example, could make the public schools altogether expendable; the human being would then become a thought automaton. He would become exceptionally clever but would not have a consciousness of it. This cleverness would just run off like a machine. What do many people today care, however, whether the human being has an inner life or not, as long as outwardly he walks around and does this or that? Such human beings that submit themselves by preference to the Ahrimanic civilization — and they do exist today — strive for such ideals. After all, what could be more tempting than the attitude, such as today is spreading far and wide, which would prefer to find an injectible substance to struggling with the children for years and years? One must present these things as being drastic. If one does not present the situation as being drastic, humanity today would not notice toward what goals it is striving. By such an injectible substance, one would simply achieve a loosening of the etheric body in the physical body.
As soon as the etheric body is loosened, the play between the etheric body and the universe would become exceedingly lively, and man would become an automaton. The physical body here on earth must be developed through spiritual will.

I myself have never been afraid of exposing myself to a possible infection, I have never been infected, I have never suffered from an infectious disease. It was precisely because of this that I could determine that the mere awareness, the strong awareness of the haunting of a disease, from the astral body [that is, from the emotional part of the human being] can cause illness. What is the point of the smallpox vaccination? [Smallpox epidemics were common at the time.] There’s something odd about that. You see, if a child is vaccinated, and the parent is an anthroposophist and raises this child anthroposophically, then that inoculation does no harm. It only harms those who are mainly raised with materialistic thoughts. Then the inoculation becomes a kind of ahrimanic power; then the person in question can no longer free himself from a kind of materialistic feeling. And that is actually the dubious thing about the smallpox vaccination, that people are almost permeated with a phantom [like an invisible corset]. Man then has a phantom which prevents him from making the powers of his soul as independent from the physical organism as is the case with normal consciousness. He becomes constitutionally materialistic, he cannot rise to something spiritual. That’s the problem with this vaccination. Of course, this always involves statistics. The question is whether it is precisely for these things that so much value should be attached to statistics. There is a strong psychological factor in the smallpox vaccination.

It is certainly not excluded that the belief that the vaccination helps plays an incalculably large role. But this belief can be replaced by something else. If people were raised more according to their true nature, they would also be open to something other than such an inoculation. For example, if people were to be brought closer to their minds again, it is certainly possible that – contrary to the subconsciously intrusive message: There is a smallpox epidemic here! — the full realization that something spiritual is at play here, albeit something illegitimately spiritual, against which I have to stand up, would work just as well. Either way, people should be made strong against such influences.
In line with this a doctor asks: If the circumstances are like in our regions, where raising awareness through education and the like is very difficult, what should we do?
Rudolf Steiner: Then you must vaccinate. There is no other option. For fanatically opposing these things is something I would absolutely not recommend, not on medical but on general anthroposophical grounds. A fanatical stance towards these things is not what we strive for, we want to change things on a large scale on the basis of insight.
I’ve always held that up to the doctors I was friends with, for example to Dr Asch, who insisted on not vaccinating. I’ve always fought that. Because if he doesn’t vaccinate, someone else will. It is completely pointless to work fanatically in such a detail area.

“So we have three figures: man stands there in his essence; under him, Thou hast already perceived, Ahriman, who is imprisoned in the abysses of the earth by the action of the outstretched hand of the main figure upon the gold that is in the earth; Ahriman clings to it. The other hand goes up and breaks Lucifer’s wings, which plunges into the abyss.

Now it comes down to the fact that this is not made from the laws of sculpture. It is not a matter of symbolizing, but rather that each individual trait in the three beings is created in the most precise, most precise detail from the spiritual-scientific view.

In the center the representative of humanity, the Christ, his right arm directed downwards, his left arm raised upwards, in such a way that his figure as an expression of embodied love is placed midway between Ahriman and Lucifer. The Christ is not hostile to these two figures; he stands there as the self-embodied love. Lucifer does not fall because Christ makes him fall, but because he cannot endure the closeness of the Christ, the closeness of the being who is the embodiment of love.”
